And thousands of beautiful kites flying in the April breeze? CHECK!

The April 21 Spartanburg Soaring! Community event at the Chapman Cultural Center encourages creativity, promotes healthy outdoor activity and builds civic pride through cultural curiosity, active play and events across the city.

Kids can make and decorate their own kites, purchase a kite from the CCC, or bring a kite from home. The festival is free and open to all. The kite festival will be held in and around the Chapman Cultural Center, where hundreds of colorful kites will fill the skies above Spartanburg.

When they’re done flying kites, the event’s Kid Zone will feature various events scheduled throughout the day by community organizations including Hub City KidsKidding Around SpartanburgCity of Spartanburg Parks & RecreationThe Children’s Museum of the Upstate – Spartanburg, Spartanburg County Historical Association, and Spartanburg County Public Libraries.

But the kites won’t just be for kids’ play. Professional kite flyers will be in attendance with jaw-dropping aerial displays. Spartanburg Soaring KiteClub, a group of locals that was formed after our inaugural festival, will be on hand, led by master kite maker and local enthusiast Chuck Holmes.

And you don’t have to be a kite-flyer to enjoy the event.

This year’s festival promises to have great eats with something for everyone, from vendors including Herb’N EatsGrowler Haus – Spartanburg, PIG on FIRE BBQ and a number of other food trucks.

The event will also showcasing one of Spartanburg’s greatest assets: the arts.

The Makers Market will be set up where regional artisans will sell their wares—keeping 100% of their profits—so you can keep a piece of local culture even after you fly away. Everything will be affordable and locally handcrafted.
