Spartanburg is a Bike Town

In fact, we’ve been known as a Bicycle Friendly Community since 2006 and were the first in the state of SC to earn the recognition by the League of American Bicyclists. Spartanburg is also home of the Assault on Mt. Mitchell, one of the country’s toughest cycling challenges. Here you’ll find great road rides, challenging adventures in the woods, downtown bike rentals along with professional races hosted in our area. It’s one of the things that makes us revolutionary (that’s a nod to our history).

Clubs and Organizations:

Partners for Active Living

Partners for Active Living (PAL) seeks to make Spartanburg County a healthy, more livable community by promoting walking, bicycling, and physical activity as a part of everyday life. The organization has numerous programs featuring cycling, and was integral to the success of Spartanburg earning a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation in 2007, and becoming the first bike-friendly community in the state of South Carolina. The designation was extended in 2012 for an additional 4 years. For more info on PAL and its initiatives, see http://www.biketownspartanburg.org/

Freewheelers of Spartanburg

Formed in 1973, the Freewheelers of Spartanburg, Inc., is a non-profit community service organization, whose purpose is to provide education and promotion of bicycle safety and a forum for amateur sports competition and touring.  The Freewheelers also organize and run the Assault on Mt. Mitchell and Assault on Marion annual bike rides.  Currently the club has more than 1,000 members from the US, Canada and Germany.  For more info, visit http://www.freewheelers.info/

Palmetto Cycling Coalition

A member-supported non-profit organization working to improve bicycling access, safety and education in South Carolina, dedicated to making South Carolina more bicycle friendly.  The organization believes in the value of bicycling for healthy lifestyles and communities across our Palmetto state. For events, resources and bike laws, check out http://www.pccsc.net/

Group Rides:

What better way to see the area and meet new people than on a bicycle! There are many rides to choose from and some even have social hour afterwards.

Rent a Bicycle

While you are on vacation you’d really like to take a bicycle ride, but you didn’t bring a bike with you. B-cycle to the rescue! It’s there when you need it and gone when you don’t.

Bikes can be checked out at any station and returned to any station.

To use B-cycle, cyclists pay for a membership — starting from $5 for a 24-hour pass and then for usage, with the first hour being free. Spartanburg was the first in the southeast to offer this bike-sharing program.

Annual Events:

Spartanburg Regional Criterium

The downtown criterium is a pro cycling race on a closed-circuit, multi-lap course know for its drastic high speeds and tight racing packs. It is a featured event in Spartanburg's largest annual festival, Spring Fling , and included in the USA CRITS Speed Week series, which is guaranteed to draw top national racing teams and international racers. The downtown criterium has an officially sanctioned, half-mile course that is unique for its cobblestone start/finish line, open-air plaza center, and dangerously sharp right turns.

Assault on Mt. Mitchell and Marion

Freewheelers of Spartanburg ( http://www.freewheelers.info/assaults/) hosts the Assault on Mount Mitchell and, its shorter counterpart, the Assault on Marion.  The event includes a 102-mile climb to the highest point east of the Mississippi River and a 72-mile climb to the town of Marion, NC.  Close to 1,000 bicyclists from around the country test their endurance and abilities to complete this journey each year.

Stump Jump

The Stump Jump ( Annual Stump Jump XC Mountain Bike Race) is the USAC-MTN South Carolina State qualifying race for the USAC-MTN Nationals held at Croft State Park (Southside Trail) in Spartanburg, SC. This event is hosted by Spartanburg Parks Commission. See www.stumpjump.org for more details.

Art Cycle On display April – September

This project invites regional artists to construct outdoor public sculptures out of recycled bicycle parts. The sculptures will be unveiled in mid- April and will remain on display with a self-guided tour in downtown Spartanburg through September. Art Cycle is a project of the Spartanburg Creative Energy, City of Spartanburg, Partners for Active Living and Hub-Bub.
