There is a reason the word "art" is in SpARTanburg.
Spartanburg is one of South Carolina’s most established, respected, progressive, and diverse art communities. From the fine arts — ballet, symphonies, opera -- to the cutting edge -- street performers, graffiti, dance mobs -- there is art aplenty for everyone in what locals refer to as “Hub City.” Most recently, because of the concentration of creativity, the heart of downtown Spartanburg was designated a “cultural district” by the South Carolina Arts Commission. Within the cultural district, you can walk to and enjoy world-class art galleries, studios, music venues, breweries, fine restaurants (culinary arts), book stores (local literature publishing), coffee shops, libraries, and museums. On most any day, you are likely to encounter live music in the streets, featuring jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, or beach music. On the streets themselves there are many displays of public art -- statues, murals, and funky temporary installations -- most of which were created by local artists. Insider’s tip: If you are here on the third Thursday of the month, join the ArtWalk, when most of the galleries and museums are open 5-9 p.m. It is an evening of meeting and greeting, and seeing the latest works of art, and it’s free! If you are looking for a vibe, this is where you’ll find it. As you venture out beyond downtown, you’ll encounter art, creativity, and entertainment of every variety, such as themed festivals, multifaceted art centers, artists co-ops, and some of the largest performance venues in the state. If you are looking for a hub creativity in Upstate South Carolina, you have found it in the Hub City. Please check out the many art-related links below. Yes, there is art in SpARTanburg.
