Discover Spartanburg County's Water Fun at April Event

An April event at Lake Cooley will showcase the Tyger River Watershed to local residents and visitors alike.

The family Discover Your Watershed event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 21, is free and open to people of all ages (while those under 18 need to be accompanied by an adult). There will be recreational opportunities, educational exhibits, door prizes, paddleboard/ kayak lessons and a canoe/ kayak pass giveaway.

While local residents may know about the Tyger River, it’s a great chance for locals and visitors to come and experience it for the first time – or the 10th.

“Discover Your Watershed connects people to the Tyger River Watershed and promotes the many benefits that it provides,” said Kevin Steins, director of the Spartanburg County Parks & Recreation.

“These benefits include the recreational opportunities and Discover Your Watershed is a great way to showcase this natural resource to the public.” Since the event will also celebrate Earth Day 2018, organizers also hope to raise awareness of the importance of safeguarding our water resources.

Registration is not required for the event, but free lunch will be available to the first 350 people who register.

The Tyger River Basin, which encompasses more than 800 square miles through the South Carolina Piedmont, is one of Spartanburg County’s natural treasures.

Formed by the confluence of the South Tyger River, Middle Tyger River and the North Tyger River, it includes six watersheds, 973 stream miles and nearly 3,000 acres of lake waters. The waters flow through more than half-a-million acres, with 80 percent of that being forest and farmland, and eventually drains into the Broad River.
