Converse Heights Historic District

Spartanburg, SC
Area: Spartanburg

The Converse Heights neighborhood, located near downtown Spartanburg, was one of Spartanburg's first suburbs with most of the houses being built between 1905 and 1950. A mix of modest bungalows and grand mansions, the area includes Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, and Craftsman architecture. Most lots are laid out in a dense grid with narrow, but deep yards shaded by 100-year-old oak and pecan trees. A recent urban reforestation project by the Converse Heights Neighborhood Association funded primarily with a grant from Spartanburg's Noble Trees Foundation has planted hundreds of new streetscape trees beneath the grand old canopy of 'noble trees'. Broad boulevards and avenues with sidewalks throughout and a central pocket park, Happy Hollow, make Converse Heights an active-living paradise. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, Converse Heights real estate has held its value because of the charm of the place and the pride of homeowners in maintaining the integrity of this fine old family neighborhood.
