What was once an old Nash Rambler car dealership is now the front line of creative culture in downtown Spartanburg. The Showroom Gallery and Perfomance Hall is a cultural gathering spot that houses HUB-BUB.com and the Artists-In-Residence Program. This non-profit arts organization offers more than 100 nights of entertainment a year, including concerts, film, progressive art exhibits, poetry readings, experimental theatre, workshops, community forums and more. The dictionary defines hubbub as a louf noise of many voices. Launched on the unsuspecting city of Spartanburg in a guerrilla marketing campaign in 2004, HUB-BUB.com has brought together many of the city's cutting edge artists, musicians and activists. Together they produce a constant stream of programming that has something for everyone-from the annual Green Screen Film Series, to the national music acts, from 'Bring Your Own Art' nights, to poetry slams. Check out the online event calendar to see what HUB-BUB is up to this week, or drop by the gallery 9-5 weekdays. One of the most innovative programs of its kind in the country, the HUB-BUB Artist-In-Residence program brings three young visual artists and one creative writer to Spartanburg to live in roomy apartments above The Showroom. These young artists spend 11 months in Spartanburg assisting with HUB-BUB events and performing a variety of community service arts projects. The AIR prgram, now a member of the Alliance of Artist Communities, is funded by private donors, including the Nimony Foundation of Los Angeles. The Hub City Writers Project is an independent, community based press that has published more than 35 titles, sponsors literary contests, and hosts creative writing conferences, workshops, and readings. Modeling the orginization after the Depression-era Federal Writers Project, Hub City has marshalled the talents of writers across SC to creat a series of books characterized by a strong sense of place. Together these great orginizations form Hub-Culture, 'building communities through dynamic arts and ideas'. The Showroom is located at 149 S. Daniel Morgan Avenue in downtown Spartanburg. |
