The term “setting up shop” is gaining popularity in Spartanburg. Each year dozens of merchants add to the community’s growing variety of retail outlets. From smaller businesses offering personal service and specialized merchandise to major chain stores, Spartanburg’s growth as a shopping destination is on the rise.

The DOWNTOWN DISTRICT has seen a dramatic rise in the number of shops opening their doors. “I chose to locate my store downtown because of the renewed interest and excitement of people coming down here. Whether you are shopping in my store or eating at one of the many restaurants, you can feel the enthusiasm for Spartanburg,” says Laura Schmid, owner of Divas On Main. “The fact that we are accessible to people both on the Eastside and Westside has helped us grow. With more stores and restaurants opening, this is a great place to do business.”

Within the past several years Spartanburg’s downtown has added jewelry stores, bookshops, boutiques, pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and more. For those who like to shop, dine and play, downtown offers a “one-stop” concept with stores all within walking distance of each other.

Another booming shopping area is HILLCREST ROW, which includes Hillcrest Specialty Row, and Cambridge Place just across the way. “You can get your hair done here, buy a vacuum, enjoy lunch and everything in between,” says Marie Brax, President of the Hillcrest Row Merchants Association and owner of Cheese & Wine, Etc. “Our stores are owned and operated by local people who are involved in our community.”
