Freewheelers of Spartanburg

Formed in 1973, the Freewheelers of Spartanburg, Inc., is a non-profit community service organization, the purpose of which is to provide education and promotion of bicycle safety and a forum for amateur sports competition and touring within the meaning of non-profits of the Internal Revenue Code. Currently our club has over 1000+ members, with members from all of US, Canada and Germany. With the youngest member being 14 years old and the oldest member being 79 years old.

Annual Events:

Spartanburg Regional Criterium

  • The downtown criterium is a pro cycling race on a closed-circuit, multi-lap course know for its drastic high speeds and tight racing packs. It is a featured event in Spartanburg's largest annual festival, Spring Fling , and included in the USA CRITS Speed Week series, which is guaranteed to draw top national racing teams and international racers. The downtown criterium has an officially sanctioned, half-mile course that is unique for its cobblestone start/finish line, open-air plaza center, and dangerously sharp right turns. 

Assault on Mt. Mitchell and Marion

  • Freewheelers of Spartanburg ( http://www.freewheelers.info/) hosts the Assault on Mount Mitchell and, its shorter counterpart, the Assault on Marion.  The event includes a 102-mile climb to the highest point east of the Mississippi River and a 72-mile climb to the town of Marion, NC.  Close to 2,000 bicyclists from around the country test their endurance and abilities to complete this journey each year.

Stump Jump

  • The Stump Jump is the USAC-MTN South Carolina State qualifying race for the USAC-MTN Nationals held at Croft State Park (Southside Trail) in Spartanburg, SC. This event is hosted by Spartanburg Parks Commission. See www.stumpjump.org for more details.

Art Cycle On display April – September

This project invites regional artists to construct outdoor public sculptures out of recycled bicycle parts. The sculptures will be unveiled in mid- April and will remain on display with a self-guided tour in downtown Spartanburg through September. Art Cycle is a project of the Spartanburg Creative Energy, City of Spartanburg, Partners for Active Living and Hub-Bub.
